Social Studies- The story takes place in Japan and immediately my children noticed things from the book that were different from where we live: the clogs they wear, the way they sit around the table on cushions instead of chairs and the strange symbols for writing. We coloured pictures of Japan from our Around the World colouring book and I opened up our Children Just Like Me book and read to them bits and pieces about Daisuke the boy from Japan. My 6 year old started copying Daisuke's name in Japanese out of the book so I looked up their names in Japanese on the interent and they copied them onto their pages.

Language Arts- We talked a little about lying because Mako tries to deceive her mother into buying her new clogs. Then we copied a verse about lying Proverbs 12:22.
Art- We made Japanese Paper Lanterns. My 6 year old was disappointed we didn't actually put lights inside them.
Math- We coloured pictures of clogs the appropriate colours: "A black pair, two blue pairs, three yellow pairs, four red pairs, five white pairs, and many, many more than that."
Science- We talked about the different animals that come from Japan. We had already studied Japanese macaques earlier in the year so I showed them pictures of Koi fish and a few other Japanese animals.
